At a glance
Formerly known as the Queensland Government Chief Information Office (QGCIO), the Queensland Government Customer and Digital Group (QGCDG) is responsible for ensuring the state Government’s ICT investments are reliable, support policy outcomes, focused on service delivery, and represent good value for money.
QGCDG have been collecting and managing significant data sets across the Queensland Government for decades, and over time found their existing processes to be ineffective and costly.
We helped QGCDG seamlessly migrate and manage their data within a secure cloud environment, and continue to manage and upgrade their analytics environment to take advantage of the latest cloud technologies.

The challenge
Ineffective data management creating unreliable decisions
The QGCDG provides advice to Queensland Government agencies and executive Government on setting ICT strategy, adopting better practice for ICT investment management, identifying and managing risks, identifying and managing strategic workforce capability issues, facilitating strategic relationships with industry partners, and more.
Collating from a rich data source over the years means having to securely manage as well as cleverly visualise that data to create informed decision-making opportunities. Over time, the existing legacy system became ineffective, unreliable, and costly.
In 2014, the QGCDG launched a tender process to find the right partner to help migrate their system to the cloud and expertly manage their data sets.
The solution
Creating clarity with the cloud
From winning the tender in 2014, we underwent a thorough discovery session with the QGCDG team to establish a formal and strategic transition plan, which included generating a change control document to ensure that the migration to the cloud will be successful.
A key piece of the solution was to develop a managed service for the Analytics Platform. This gives the QGCDG team a secure and private analytics environment to view and manipulate existing visualisations and models.
We then migrated and upgraded an existing Microsoft database to store, collate and transform the base data sets, followed by upgrading the environment with multi-factor authentication (MFA) as well as more advanced user administration and system logging.
This project leveraged AWS technologies including Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), AWS Lambda – Serverless Compute, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) Buckets, Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), and Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).
"Strategenics offer a very responsive service for an affordable price. The service they have provided us for the past 5 years has been reliable with almost no outages.
They shield us from having to understand the nuances of AWS configuration and allow us to focus on our business activities."
